Months after the Rising Fortune reached the Isle of Echoes,
Captain Nathaniel Thorn and his crew have begun building something
close to a life in New Britannica. The island, however, is proving
far less settled than its maps suggest.
When a man from their past reappears, he leaves behind more questions
than answers — and a shard of black glass that behaves like no ordinary
stone. Soon afterward, Red Bess vanishes, taken by men who appear to
know about the shard and believe Thorn has something they want.
Thorn's search pulls his people beyond the borders they know and into
a landscape of rival kingdoms, guarded roads, hidden prisons, and old
powers with their own histories on the island. Meanwhile, Bess finds
herself among other prisoners, including an island-born fighter named
Sawyer and a quiet young woman whose dreams seem to point toward events
before they happen.
As separate paths begin to converge, old enemies return under new
circumstances and the struggle surrounding the artifacts grows larger
than any single ship or crown. What first looked like an isolated mystery
begins to reveal a conflict buried beneath kingdoms, borders, and histories
that were never meant to exist side by side.
