What the Maps Don't Show

Months after the Rising Fortune reached the Isle of Echoes, Captain Nathaniel Thorn and his crew have begun building something close to a life in New Britannica. The island, however, is proving far less settled than its maps suggest.

When a man from their past reappears, he leaves behind more questions than answers — and a shard of black glass that behaves like no ordinary stone. Soon afterward, Red Bess vanishes, taken by men who appear to know about the shard and believe Thorn has something they want.

Thorn's search pulls his people beyond the borders they know and into a landscape of rival kingdoms, guarded roads, hidden prisons, and old powers with their own histories on the island. Meanwhile, Bess finds herself among other prisoners, including an island-born fighter named Sawyer and a quiet young woman whose dreams seem to point toward events before they happen.

As separate paths begin to converge, old enemies return under new circumstances and the struggle surrounding the artifacts grows larger than any single ship or crown. What first looked like an isolated mystery begins to reveal a conflict buried beneath kingdoms, borders, and histories that were never meant to exist side by side.

Roads That Should Never Have Crossed

Returning survivors and new faces drawn into a widening conflict across the Isle of Echoes.

Nathaniel Thorn

CAPTAIN · RISING FORTUNE

Nathaniel Thorn

Months after reaching the island, Thorn has begun to treat New Britannica and the people around him as something dangerously close to a home.

When Bess disappears and the trail points north, he follows it into a political landscape he does not understand, carrying a black shard he trusts even less.

Red Bess

GUNNER · RISING FORTUNE

Red Bess

Sharp-tongued, stubborn, and dangerous when cornered, Bess has survived too much to wait quietly for someone else to decide what happens to her.

Taken alive by men searching for the black shard, she becomes both prisoner and unwilling guide into a struggle whose factions and motives extend far beyond anything she expected.

Sawyer

WARRIOR · ISLE OF ECHOES

Sawyer

An island-born fighter captured for reasons of his own, Sawyer meets Bess from the other side of a cage — calm, watchful, and far more familiar with the island's powers than she is.

His knowledge of its roads, clans, and rival territories makes him valuable, but the alliances forming around him are never as simple as rescue or escape.

Elayna

PRISONER · UNKNOWN ORIGIN

Elayna

Quiet and unusually composed, Elayna is another prisoner whose presence seems easy to underestimate — until she begins speaking about dreams that do not feel like memories.

She rarely explains what she sees, but her unsettling sense of events waiting ahead makes her increasingly difficult to dismiss as the road grows more dangerous.
